Diversity in DCU

When exploring ideas for the concept ‘DCU embraces Diversity’ we thought of multiple ideas including diversity of campuses, sports, clubs and societies even buildings. But what makes up the university? The university wouldn’t be what it is today without the students that attend it. So we decided to tell the story of the very diverse, unique and wonderful students that attend DCU. DCU has a very diverse student body and in our pictures we concentrate on just that.

The fourth picture is of four forgotten physical features. The belly button is something that is very rarely exposed or thought about and yet it is one of our most quirky, individual body features. Its shape is personally designed by you for you. Through our pictures we wanted to embrace and celebrate everyday diversity and the belly button is a great way of doing this. Its something everybody has and takes for granted, the great diversity of the human body is something that should be acknowledged and celebrate even the less glamorous parts. We put the individual photos into a college so they could be easily compared and their individualities could be distinguished. There was very little editing done apart from this because we wanted this photo to be a true representation of the human body.

The members of our group have had very different college experience , just like all students in DCU. Some students have chosen different roads to get to DCU, as some of us came in as mature students, others came in through PLC courses,  while others came in through the conventional route of the CAO.In the first photo above it shows 3 students who took 3 different pathway to access DCU via mature student route,PLC,and of course the CAO.This show how diverse DCU is as a college no matter your age, background or educational status everyone is accepted here and welcome to expand their education and knowledge.

The third is four different hairstyles. It appears as though we picked four very plain hairstyles, colours and cuts but we did this intentionally. We want to celebrate the diversity of the plain everyday person. It's true that now a days multicoloured hair in dreads, braids curls fancy upstyles or no hair at all  is considered different. But we want to show that even if you haven't got crazy hair colour, crazy eye makeup or clothes you are still diverse. Diversity is a slightly different shade of brown or black or blonde, everyone's natural hair colour is diverse and this is what this photo is trying to say. A person choosing to wear a ponytail or bun or wear their hair down or gelled up is diversity. Diversity doesn't have to be something drastically different it can be a simple choice we make everyday like what way we wear our hair.

Students following three photos concentrate on the literal student body on campus, we took a look at students physical body emphasizing the diversity of their physical features.

It’s said that the eyes are the window to the soul so what better way to take a good look at our student body then the eyes. This shot combines six pairs of eyes from DCU students. To create a dramatic affect and to show the contrast in each pair of eyes we put the pictures on top of one another. This shows that all eyes are completely different, the colour, shape eyelashes and under eye. The picture shows that it cannot be said that two people even have the same coloured eyes. There's three people in this photo with blue eyes, two with brown and one with green. Every person has a different shade of blue a different shape and different lashes and likewise with the brown eyes.  This photo also represents the variety of age groups that study on the DCU campus. The older student can be noticed by the deeper ‘laughing lines’ and the younger students by the lack of such. Our eyes show our true emotions and perhaps even our soul this picture tries to convey this but also embrace the variety beauty and unique feature our eyes are.

Our final picture is of a group of students. In this photo our main aim is to highlight the diversity in fashion choices on campus. This photo shows just the students clothes in colour so we are not distracted by the background or faces and allows us to concentrate on their clothes. There is a huge diversity of fashion on the DCU campus and societies like style soc allows students to express themselves through their clothes. This ties in nicely with our previous pictures on the diverse student body as however beautiful our body is we always need to clothe it for practical reasons.
